I remember watching the behind the scenes on this show. The creator of the show said that they got so much fan mail saying this show was the most realistic hospital show.
It’s true. This is how doctors help get through the day.
Making jokes is okay. What is NEVER okay, is making jokes at the patient’s expense, or about physical attributes of the patients.
In medical school, and even during internship and residency, I had occasion to rotate with attendings that made all kinds of jokes that made me uncomfortable. I resolved to try to never do that myself.
And now that I am an attending physician myself, I make clear to any student rotating with me that those kinds of jokes are not tolerated.
